Although no one can foresee the future CompStat makes it far easier to anticipate it. Before CompStat was instituted, the dominant model of policing was essentially reactive. Officers responded to crime, or concentrated their preventative energies in areas where crime was historically a problem. However, given that crime hot spots can change very quickly with shifting demographics, or can exhibit subtle differences based upon the time of day or year, rigorous statistical analysis enable departments to more effectively anticipate where and what types of crimes will occur in a manner that reflects the current reality.
